Meet John, our Director of Studies!
I’m John, the Director of Studies at Speak Your Mind Diagonal. My story’s a bit complicated but I’ll try and explain it as quickly and easily as possible!
I was born in Wolverhampton, a city in The UK. I spent the first 12 years of my life living in Worcester, a small city in The Midlands famous for its sauce, (Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce).
Both my parents are Greek Cypriot and my family and I moved to Cyprus when I was 12, where I lived until I was 20. After spending a year in the army, (national service is still compulsory in Cyprus), I moved back to The UK where I went to University and studied for my degree.
I studied Sport Science and Education studies at The University of Worcester where I gained experience teaching and coaching children, which was a huge passion of mine at the time. After finishing my degree I worked in a College as a youth worker, before finally moving to Barcelona 4 years ago.
I moved to Barcelona to be with my Spanish girlfriend, who is now my wife! I love Barcelona. As a city it’s perfect because it’s so compact, but it still has that big city feel. Having the beach also gives the city a more relaxed atmosphere, and with my Mediterranean heritage I feel right at home! The food is excellent and the weather is perfect, however even in the summer the sea can be a little chilly for my liking!
Some of my passions are travelling, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. Whenever possible I like to escape with my wife for a few days to the Pyrenees to get away from the city. I think people in Barcelona are very spoilt as we have everything a stone’s throw away, i.e. the beach and the mountains!
Another huge passion of mine is teaching English and the thing I enjoy most about teaching English with the Speak Your Mind Method is that you really see students learn and progress. People who study English using the Speak Your Mind Method want to SPEAK English, and that’s what they do from the very first day! You are able to see students use words and phrases that they couldn’t use or didn’t even know a few weeks earlier and because the material is so adaptable to everyday situations, the students are really able to put what they learn to use when they travel or for work or even at school in our Speakers’ Corner!
