Hi, my name is David and I am one of the teachers at Speak Your Mind. I am from Manchester, a great city in the north of the UK. The weather is terrible but the music, the football and the people are fantastic. It might not be a great place for a holiday but it was a wonderful city to live in. I have been living in Barcelona for the last seven months and I have found it to be an amazing city. Obviously the weather is better than I am used but more importantly Barcelona has a really vibrant culture. You can see music, film, theatre and art exhibitions every day. I have visited many times in the past and it was always a dream of mine to come and live here. I moved here with my partner, who is from Cyprus. One of the main reasons we wanted to live here was to be immersed in a new language. We are both studying Spanish now and we will hopefully learn Catalan later. Learning a new language has really helped with being an English teacher and I think I can understand the problems my students face a lot better than before.
I love working with people of all ages and abilities and the best part of my job is without doubt the students. I spent two years in Manchester teaching English to people from all over the world and I also spent three years working with people with learning disabilities. I have met a lot of interesting people with very different stories and backgrounds. I love challenging situations and teaching a language provides them every day. I have a lot of energy and I talk a lot, possibly too much, so a job in which I constantly meet new people and work closely with them is perfect.
Apart from studying Spanish, I spend most of my time playing music. I have been playing drums and all types of percussion since I was eleven years old. I have been involved in a lot of different projects and performed in many cities, including Barcelona. I have organized music workshops for many different groups of people, including children, disabled people and young offenders. Recently I have played some concerts in Gracia and Raval and I am eager to learn more about the local music scene and to play with local musicians. For me music is a great method of communication and I have often played with people who speak a different language. It just makes it more interesting.
